West Virginia Senate Approves Firearm Tax Holiday; Governor Considers Veto

A bill which exempts the purchase of firearms from West Virginia’s 6% sales tax during the first weekend of each October has been approved by the Senate. Governor Joe Manchin expressed concerns about the state’s revenues. He agreed to give the bill a full review, but would not rule out the possibility of a veto.

Hawaii Governor Vetos Amazon Law

Governor of Hawaii, Linda Lingle, has vetoed a bill that would force Hawaii’s online retailers to collect the state’s sales tax for advertising on websites. As a result, web based companies such as Amazon are reinstating their associate programs with internet partners in the state.

Nevada Lawmakers Override Governor Veto

SB 429 was vetoed by Governor Jim Gibbons on 28 May 2009.  Nevada lawmakers promptly overrode his veto on 29 May 2009.  The override will result into SB 429 increasing the local schools support tax portion of the sales tax at the state level by 0.35% effective 1 July 2009.

Hawaii Majority Democrats Override Governor’s Veto on Four Tax Measures

Hawaii Majority Democrats overrode Republican Governor Linda Lingle’s vetoes of four tax measures 8 May 2009, including raising the hotel room tax rate (SB 1111) from 7.25% to 9.25% over the next two years.  The first one percent increase will occur 1 July 2009, and the second one percent 1 July 2010.
