Idaho House Committee Votes Down Streamlined Sales Tax Project Participation
April 5th, 2010On 18 March 2010, the Idaho House Revenue and Taxation Committee voted 9-9 against sending representatives to participate in discussions for the Streamlined Sales Tax Project. After being presented with the many changes to the current state sales and use tax laws that would be required to belong to the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement, the committee voted in a tie, which kills any bill. The changes would have included levying an “Amazon” tax, reimbursing retailers who collect sales tax, and about 36 other changes to Idaho’s current sales tax laws.
South Dakota House Committee Votes Down Bill
March 1st, 2010A local House committee in Pierre has voted down a bill that would have allowed towns in South Dakota to raise the sales tax by one percent. The bill would have also required that a city inform voters how long the tax would be in effect and when it would end.
South Dakota Grocery Bill Shot Down
March 1st, 2010The South Dakota bill that would have eliminated the 4% state tax on some food while raising taxes on others has been killed in the House, and is going back to the Chamber for reconsideration.
Alaska Sales Tax Proposals Defeated in Sitka, Fairbanks, Homer and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough
October 14th, 2009Several sales tax proposals were defeated in the 6 October 2009 vote in Alaska. A proposal to increase the sales tax rate in Sitka by 0.5% to finance road improvements and repairs was defeated. Fairbanks voters rejected the proposed 3% sales tax to fund police, fire protection and roadwork. Voters in Homer rejected the proposed 3% sales tax on nonprepared foods from 1 September to 31 May. Finally, Matanuska-Susitna Borough voters rejected the proposed 3% sales tax set to take effect in July 2010.

Proposed County Sales Tax in Outagamie County, Wisconsin Defeated
September 29th, 2009On 25 August 2009, the Outagamie County Board voted against a resolution to create a committee to study a 0.05% county sales tax.
Arizona State Sales Tax Referendum Defeated
August 18th, 2009The sales tax referendum to increase the current 5.6% state sales tax rate in Arizona by 1% over the next three years was narrowly defeated on 13 August 2009. The referendum did not garner the required 16 votes to pass the Arizona Senate and make it onto the ballot.
Ponderay City Resort City Tax Proposal Fails
June 8th, 2009In February of 2009 Ponderay City Council had approved a resort city tax increase of 0.5%, which would have raised the resort city sales tax to 6.5%. This proposal failed to gain enough approval and did not make it to the voting stage.
