Gilbert, AZ Voters Will Decide on Sales Tax Increase in May

The Gilbert Town Council in Arizona narrowly approved the inclusion of a 0.25% sales tax increase on the 18 May 2010 ballot. If approved, funds from the sales tax increase would go to fund public safety, which is defined as police, fire, court and prosecutor office services.

Phoenix, Arizona Will Consider a Food Tax

During the City of Phoenix Council meetings in January, it appeared that at least 6 of the 9 Council members support, or are open to considering a food tax to aid with the 2010 budget shortfall. Council members plan to further discuss the food tax, as well as other revenue generating options, during 12 public hearings regarding the budget in February 2010. Council members indicated that additional financial data and citizen input is needed before the Council will vote on the matter.

Voters in Tempe, Arizona Will Vote on 0.2% Sales Tax Increase

On 7 January 2010, the Tempe City Council voted to include a sales tax increase proposal on the general ballot in May 2010. If passed, the proposal would increase the sales tax rate from 1.8% to 2.0%.

Arizona State Sales Tax Referendum Defeated

The sales tax referendum to increase the current 5.6% state sales tax rate in Arizona by 1% over the next three years was narrowly defeated on 13 August 2009. The referendum did not garner the required 16 votes to pass the Arizona Senate and make it onto the ballot.

Bullhead City Ends Collection Agreement With Arizona DOR

The Bullhead City Council voted to collect its own sales taxes returns and end its collection agreement with the Arizona Department of Revenue (AZDOR) effective 31 March 2009.  Bullhead City chose Revenue Discovery Systems (RDS) as a partner to assist the staff in the self collection tasks.  Taxpayers will begin filing their returns and remitting tax payments to RDS on behalf of Bullhead City beginning with the reporting period ending 31 March 2009 with a due date of 20 April 2009.  Effective 1 April 2009 online filing and pay will be available at www.revds.com.
