Vote to Consider Sales Tax in Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks City voters will decide whether to approve a proposed 3% sales tax on the 6 October 2009 ballot. If approved, the sales tax revenue would be used to fund the city’s police and fire protection and roadwork.

Proposed County Sales Tax in Outagamie County, Wisconsin Defeated

On 25 August 2009, the Outagamie County Board voted against a resolution to create a committee to study a 0.05% county sales tax.

Voters to decide on 0.05% Proposed Safety Tax in Benton, Arkansas

September 29th, 2009

Voters in Benton, Arkansas will vote on a proposed 0.05% sales tax on 10 November 2009. If approved, the sales tax would become effective 1 April 2011. The sales tax revenue would be used to fund the city’s public safety departments.

Virginia issues guidelines and rules for 2009 tax amnesty program

The Virginia Department of Taxation issues guidelines and rules for “Get Square VA,” the 2009 Virginia a tax amnesty program, which runs from October 7th through December 5th.  For eligible tax filers with delinquent tax payments, all penalties and one half of the accrued interest will be waived when the total due payments and one half of the accrued interest is paid.  See Virginia Public Document Ruling 09-140, 09/28/2009, or Virginia State ordinance L. 2009, S1120 (c. 611), for more details and eligibility requirements.

North Carolina Allows Counties to impose a 0.5% Local Sales Tax to Fund Transportation

Effective 27 August 2009, HB 148 was passed, giving local taxing authorities the right to impose, subject to voter approval, a 0.5% local sales and use tax to fund public transportation systems. Certain counties that operate public transportation are allowed to levy an additional 0.25% local sales tax to fund it’s public transportation.

Wisconsin Sales and Use Tax to be Conformed to Requirements of Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement

The Wisconsin Legislature passed the Main Street Equity Act, which will allow Wisconsin’s sales and use tax to be conformed to the  requirements of the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement as part of 2009 Wisconsin Act 2. The Main Street Equity Act will become effective 1 October 2009.

California Permits One Month Extension Due to Fires

The California State Board of Equalization (SBE) and Employment Development Department (EDD) announced a plan to give emergency tax relief to business and citizens in Santa Cruz, Ventura, Imperial, San Bernardino, Mariposa, Placer, Los Angeles, Monterey, and Yuba Counties due to the August 2009 fire.  The SBE will permit a one month extension to file sales and use taxes without any additional fees. South Carolina Eliminates Energy Star Tax Holiday

South Carolina residents will not have the opportunity to take part in the Energy Star Appliance sales tax holiday this year during the month of October.  On 4 May 2009, the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled the holiday unconstitutional.

Kentucky State Rep. is proposing a sales tax holiday

Kentucky State Representative Fitz Steele is preparing the proposal of a three-day tax holiday spanning a Friday to Sunday in early August.  The proposal outlines that items such as clothes, computers, and school supplies would be exempt from the state sales tax, whether they are purchased in a retail store, or online.

Ohio considers tax holidays

The Ohio Sales Tax Reform Incentive is pushing the idea of sales tax holidays in the state Legislature.  Two sales tax holidays are being considered, a back-to-school sales tax holiday and a holiday season sales tax holiday, the two holidays are not mutually exclusive.
